Closing Word

The meeting opened with a moment of silence.

Check in sentence:
Josh Albertson – Celebrated Thanksgiving with his whole family for the first time in 20 years.
Nadine Hoover – Is at Gay Howard’s, who offered her a 10-day writing retreat to finish her book, Creating Cultures of Peace.
Gay Howard – Happy with Nadine’s visit to her Meeting (Central Coast Friends Meeting) who gave a talk on how to make peace
Valerie Joy – Going to London to visit her son. His daughter just turned two.
Fenna Mandolang – The workshops in Buffalo “a taste of empowerment” are going well- also a potluck. Glad to be doing peace work at home.
Deb Wood – Fighting a cold and trying to get back on track from Thanksgiving and prepare for Christmas. Feeling a bit up in the air.

Questions and Feedback on News and Updates:

Indonesia – Registration for the International Peace Training currently has three Nepalese, five or six Americans, two Papuans, potentially five or six Koreans, two Barak Induk teachers, possibly John Leighton from QUNO Hong Kong, and many Indonesians. Valerie, Nadine, Annie, and Renee going to the remote island of Mentawai. Not visiting Baruk Induk this year- so may bring two of these facilitators to the Peace Place training. November 2017 possibility of a training in Indonesia following the International AVP Gathering.
Nepal – Focused on International AVP Gathering in Nepal November 5-11 in 2017.
Philippines – Valerie was quite tough stating she sees a lot of strong individuals doing good work, but not working together. Kins and her assistant, Gigi, are organizing activities They have an AVP Facebook, but they don’t have an organization that gets them all working together. Valerie and Nadine will be traveling to the Philippine in March 2017. Nadine will reach out to Ludwig.
Power of Goodness – no update this month

Reports:
Initiative Coordinators: Focused on nominations, see below.
Communications: Jenna’s daughter’s 12th birthday is today.

Monthly report:
In November, in addition to the routine tasks, I finished up the Fall Appeal mailing. I am still working on a way to include the Australian local meetings in our Fall news. I also worked on creating a Working Group email group list and updating print materials for the next printing as well as Australian use.

Requests for the Working Group
Stay monthly with Zoom or sign up for yearly billing? When we have Skype we need a dedicated host to join people. Zoom is easier. When we had larger calls on Skype, people “fell off” the call. We decided to continue with Zoom.

People who have expressed an interest:
Name email Date (of first contact) Interest
John Leighton 11/11/16 via email “…would like to find out more about the work of Friends Peace Teams in Asia. I am a Quaker living in Hong Kong. Is there someone who I may talk to about this? I am in contact with Valerie Joy from Brisbane…” Valerie can call him. John may be interested in coming to the training in February.
Christopher Ero 11/13/16 via email “…Greetings, Am writing from Nigeria and I wish to place my interest is to participate also in your forth coming program…” Nadine has checked with Petrus about whether we can accept Christopher on the training.
Bill Drayton ? 11/17/16 via FB message “…will be moving to Dumaguete on Negros Island. I was wondering whether you would be anywhere near there [during the 2017 Peace Team trip]. I intend to go to Tagbilaran to attend the Bohol meeting sometime next year…” Valerie will contact Bill once she has an email address.

Gratitude to NYYM World Ministries Committee for funding the college scholarships for the coming year or two!
FPT Council: Hayley Hathaway has come on as the Communications Specialist for the Council. She has sent out a survey for Council members to get to know each other. Council meeting is moving from Saturday to Monday and Dave Zarembka has stepped down- and other changes are taking place. Contact the Yearly Meetings on what Quaker peace work is today and how we might represent that in Friends Peace Teams.

Resources Needed:
AWP Working Group communication support: Please give Jenna more content, about Quaker peace work in the world and our approach to the Peace Testimony in our active service and how it makes a difference in our lives.
Jenna would like us to send her more content for publicity of FPT-AWP. We suggest we interview folk and then report on work being done.

Resources Met:
Peace Place Land purchase remaining balance US$3,100 (RP40,000,000) 3,500AUD designated to Peace Place and 500AUD undesignated will pay off the final balance. Nadine to send Jane bank details as to where to transfer the money. Payment is now complete.
2017 International Peace Training dates set for Feb 12th – 18th, visit Feb 9-23 at Peace Place in Pati, Central Java; visit Feb 23 – Mar 3 in the Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra; visit Mar 3-18 in Manila and Tagbilaran City in the Philippines. Now that dates have been set, we could explore whether we could bring some of the Afghan trainers to Indonesia. It was approved to bring 2 people from the Middle East to the training, but turned out to not feel like the right thing to do and the registration is full, so we will not do that this year.

What do we think of when we think of ‘Quaker Peace Work’?
Gay Howard – long term person to person work in the place where war has happened.
Josh Albertson- being involved locally – grassroots – Quakers put this as a priority
Nadine Hoover – That Quaker peace work has no sides, peace takes everyone, and peace is possible with everyone. And that is integrated with the moral authority of focus on truth, justice and fairness, which has it’s own structure. Quaker peace work comes alive with the living reality of love and conscience.
Valerie Joy – I think of all people as my family and once I get to know them to treat all with respect and love. I also like what Deb says- our interdependence.
Fenna Mandolang – Peace work in the Quaker context is more grounded and sustainable. It’s not limited to a purpose or a goal, but it’s woven into the fabric of things. Present, not only when it’s in the news or fashionable, but for the long-term personal relationship.
Deb Wood -Individual interactions are conducted respectfully and meeting their needs, eg after WW2 in Germany. We depend upon others in our Meeting to help us to be true to our promptings.

The Vietnamese said they allowed Friends stay in Vietnam when Vietnam was closed because Friends were the only ones who said they did not take sides, and could be trusted to do what they said. Quakers were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for “the silent assistance from the nameless to the nameless”. The respect for everyone, the integrity that can be trusted, and the attention to the small things, the small kindnesses.

Bev Polzin says she is working very hard for AVP and connections with Nepal AVP. She can’t take on FPT- AWP. However, she will ask her local Peace and Justice Fund for AUD 500 in February. Probably take her off.
Maxine Cooper is in Nepal right now and so I haven’t contacted her yet.

Closing word:
Josh Albertson – Looking forward
Nadine Hoover – newness
Gay Howard – connected
Valerie Joy – Keeping on
Fenna Mandolang – release
Deb Wood – peace
