MID NORTH ISLAND MONTHLY MEETING

                                Travelling Minute for Esther Cowley–Malcolm

The Mid North Island Monthly Meeting of Aotearoa/New Zealand sends Friendly greetings and wishes to introduce Esther Cowley-Malcolm, a long-time Friend and member of our Monthly Meeting who is travelling under concern.

The Society of Friends in Aotearoa NZ generally and several members of this Monthly Meeting individually, have been involved in the Alternatives to Violence Programme for many years. As this programme accords with our testimony to peace- making at every level, we endorse Esther’s travel to Indonesia and the Philippines to work with AVP workshops.

Over the last year and a half, Esther has organized and led workshops with the Pacific Island community groups in the town where she grew up. In that time two basic and one advanced workshops have been held, a training for facilitators has been completed, and there are more workshops planned for 2014. The success of these workshops was due to Esther’s networking among the Pacific Island Community, and her ability to develop, build, and sustain strong and enduring relationships.

This year Esther was the first student to graduate with a Ph.D. from  the Victoria University of Wellington’s Pacific Studies Programme. Her doctoral research is an exploration of Samoan parents’ perceptions of and responses to aggressive behavior in young children, and the usefulness of an intervention tool named “Play Nicely”.

We send loving greetings to the Friends who support Esther’s travel and work in the Philippines and Indonesia.
